In a peer-reviewed publication, the research team stated, “We are seeing a significant decrease in the proportion of the population with detectable antibodies over three rounds of national surveillance using a self-administered lateral flow test, 12, 18 and 24 weeks after the initial peak of infections in England. ”
The study was a joint effort between Imperial College London and market research company Ipsos MORI. The results showed that 6% of test subjects had antibodies in June and 4.4% in September, indicating a decline in immunity.
“This is in line with evidence that immunity to seasonal coronaviruses declines 6 to 12 months after infection and the emerging data on SARS-CoV-2, which also noted decreases in antibody levels over time in people who followed in longitudinal studies, ”they wrote.
British Health Secretary Lord James Bethell called the study a “critical piece of research” and stated in a press release: “It is also important that everyone knows what this means for them – this study will help in our fight against the virus, however a positive test for antibodies does not mean you are immune to Covid-19. Regardless of the result of an antibody test, everyone must continue to follow government guidelines, including social distancing, self-isolation, and testing if they have symptoms and always remember hands, face, space. ”
