According to tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg, Sam Querrey fled Russia after testing positive for Covid-19.
Sam Querrey has reportedly fled Russia after a positive Covid-19 test and a worrying phone call from Russian authorities.
The news was posted on Wednesday in an 11-tweet thread by New York Times author and host of the “No Challenges Left” podcast, Ben Rothenberg. The news comes just a day after Querrey, ranked 49th, was withdrawn from the St. Petersburg Open due to a positive Covid-19 test.
Follow the full thread here:
Querrey, his wife Abby, and his eight-month-old son Ford all tested positive, according to Rothenberg. They worried when they received a call from Russian health officials and were told that they would receive a visit from a doctor and may need to be hospitalized depending on the symptoms they were showing.
This resulted in a sudden action by Querrey, who hired a private jet to take him and his family out of the country.
The belief is that Querrey feared being separated from his child in addition to the risk of hospitalization.
If so, the decision to leave Russia could spell trouble for the American as the ATP is investigating the matter and could potentially impose fines or suspension on Querrey. It’s a tough situation for the tour, which involves negotiating the right to negotiate games in every city they host a tournament in during the pandemic. If they lose the trust of the governments they are dealing with, it could mean closing some events on tour.
Journalist on Wednesday Jon Wertheim shared an email from the ATP expressing their concerns about an unnamed player, likely Querrey.
Under the Covid-19 protocols put in place by the tour, Querrey could face fines of up to $ 100,000 or even a suspension if his actions are viewed as an “obvious” or “recurring” violation of applicable measures.
We are awaiting further testimony from Querrey, believed to be hiding in an unknown location, and the ATP.
