Covid-free certificates from Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria required for all...

British tourists planning a vacation to the Canary Islands in the next few weeks must have a negative coronavirus test or they will be denied access to their accommodation.

The Canarian Government has confirmed that all holidaymakers arriving in the islands, including Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, must bring a Covid-free certificate within 72 hours of their arrival.

If not, they will need to have a coronavirus test at a private clinic at the destination.

If they are positive, they are not allowed to stay in their hotel, apartment or holiday home and must be quarantined.

The tests in Great Britain or Spain are financed by the tourist himself or the tour operator.

Canarian President Ángel Víctor Torres and Tourism Minister Yaiza Castillo have published preliminary details of the law, which the regional government wants to pass within 15 days.

The new law is designed to maintain the downward trend in coronavirus cases in the archipelago.

The UK government lifted its 14-day quarantine rule for Brits on Sunday when they return from the Canaries and is the only place in Spain with a travel corridor to the UK.

The islands are also the only Spanish destination that does not have a new night curfew in Spain due to the low number of coronavirus cases.

If the procedure were confirmed and approved, it would be different from what the Canarian government had originally planned, namely tests on arrival at the airport.

The Canarian government says it doesn’t want to risk everything it has accomplished as travelers would mostly come from places like the UK and Germany, which are more coronavirus-prone.

Once agreed, details of the new requirement will be sent to tour operators, hotel chains, travel agents and embassies so everyone knows they need a test.

The Canary Islands currently prefer antigen tests with which a Covid infection can be detected with very high reliability in a few minutes and at low cost for the traveler.

Tourists are also advised to use a Track & Trace app that will allow them to follow their contacts if a positive Covid test occurs.

No rule is currently decided that requires travelers to have coronavirus tests when leaving the Canary Islands.
