The French-Belgian energy company Engie Electrabel has started preparations to build four large gas-fired power stations, De Tijd reports on Saturday. Four sites in Belgium have been selected and permits have been applied for.

The gas-fired power stations together would have a capacity of 3 gigawatts. According to the newspaper, this is the same as the total of the four nuclear power plants that Electrabel operates in Doel or as its three large nuclear power plants in Tihange.

Nuclear energy supplies half of the electricity in Belgium. With a full nuclear exit, Belgium will need five new large gas-fired power stations to ensure that the light continues to burn. Electrabel wants to build most of it. The company aims at sites in Vilvoorde, Les Awirs near Liège, Charleroi and at the chemical company BASF in the port of Antwerp.

With the four projects, Electrabel wants to make a bid for the million subsidies that will be allocated in October next year.
