This story is part of Apple Event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

The iPhone 12 is available now and costs $ 799 in the US. (It’s pretty good too: read ours iPhone 12 rating.) The iPhone 12 Mini is available for pre-order starting at US $ 699. There is many ways to buy Apple’s latestHowever, many of them involve financing the phone with a cellular operator that will lock you in for two or more years of comparatively expensive service.

At Verizon, for example, you can get the iPhone 12 for a reasonable-sounding $ 15 a month for 24 months – but this comes with an eligible trade-in and you must select a Verizon Unlimited service plan. These start at $ 70 per month for a single line. So you would be paying around $ 85 a month for at least two years, for a total of $ 2,040. No thanks.

My advice: consider buying your iPhone 12 unlocked and then taking it to a carrier that offers cheaper prices. You don’t even have to pay the full amount in advance. Apple will fund it for you for free. For example, the 64GB iPhone 12 would cost $ 34.54 per month. Then, if you connect to Boost Mobile (see below) for example, your monthly service fee will be $ 10. Total spend after two years: $ 1,069, a saving of nearly $ 1,000. (I’m not saying the plans are the same, just that you have more and cheaper options.)

The iPhone 12 is here. Don’t pay too much for the service.

The elephant in this special room: 5G. Your new iPhone may support it, but not all low-cost carriers just yet. Most, however, plan to introduce it soon.

Below are some of the cheapest providers and plans for budget conscious iPhone users. (Of course, these are also suitable for most other telephones.)

Are you an Optimum or Suddenlink cable subscriber? You’re eligible for additional savings of $ 10 per month, which means you can get a service for as little as $ 12. Unfortunately, while Altice (which runs on AT&T and Sprint networks) already supports 5G, the carrier’s unlimited plan costs $ 40 per month. It was previously $ 20.

Even if you aren’t using either of these two cable systems, a $ 22 monthly bill isn’t bad.

Boost’s plans start at just $ 10, and for a limited time, the carrier is doubling the normal amount of data included at that tier: 2GB instead of 1GB. You can also get 4GB (regularly 2GB) for the $ 15 plan. However, this benefit is only available for three months. After that, you’re back to 1GB or 2GB for the same price.

Even so, the option to run your iPhone 12 for just $ 10 a month is pretty amazing. Boost works in the T-Mobile network and will soon offer 5G.

Mint takes the term “prepaid” cell service to the next level: you get discounts when you pay three, six or 12 months in advance. For example, paying $ 45 would get you three months on the carrier’s 3GB plan.

However, the deals get better as you climb the steps. For example, if you prepay $ 360 (the equivalent of $ 30 per month), you get unlimited service for 12 months. Mint relies on T-Mobile’s network to offer both 4G and 5G: “Which is the strongest” depending on where you are.

While US Mobile doesn’t offer 5G service yet (surprisingly since it runs on T-Mobile and Verizon networks), it has service plans for just about every budget imaginable. That’s because you can choose from fixed plans or create a custom one. A highlight is the $ 15 plan, which includes unlimited calls and texts, and 2.5 GB of high-speed data. Bring that up to 10GB for $ 30 a month.

It is visible to the iPhone user who does not want to do without unlimited service. Though 5G isn’t in the mix just yet, the carrier’s only plan that costs $ 40 a month includes unlimited data on the Verizon network.

However, there is an easy way to get it at an even cheaper price: sign up for Visible’s Party Pay option, which can cut the monthly rate to just $ 25 per person. This is not a traditional family plan; You can do this with friends, co-workers, and even strangers you meet on Reddit.

There are other inexpensive options, but these are my favorites. If you’ve found a cheap iPhone plan that you like better, let me know in the comments!
