Apple iOS 14.1 Release: Should You Upgrade?
Apple iOS 14.1 is here and brings new features and many fixes after the (surprisingly problematic) release of iOS 14.0.1. Unfortunately, it also reintroduces a known bug. Everything you need to know is here.

Tip: bookmark this page as I will keep it updated as new issues are found. I’ll give my final verdict in a week.

For whom is that?

Apple iOS 14.1 has been released for every iOS 13 compatible device. That is, the iPhone 6S and the newer 7th generation iPod touch. An update notification should arrive automatically. Otherwise you can trigger them manually by navigating to Settings> General> Software update. Beta Tester: If you are running iOS 14.2 (see The Road Ahead section at the end), you will need to sign out your iPhone for iOS 14.1 to appear.

Apple owners, Apple switched you to iPadOS. This is not an iPadOS guide, but I will cover relevant topics in these guides.

Die Deal Breaker

Jailbreaker, stay away. Unc0ver is still under iOS 13.5 at the time of publication and while checkra1n has an iOS 14 jailbreak (not iOS 14.1), which is currently limited to Apple devices with A9 (X) chipsets and older.

Perhaps the biggest deal breaker in iOS 14.1, however, is the reintroduction of a variant of the bug in iOS 14 that resets your choice of default mail and browser apps. First discovered https://twitter.com/DCOneFourSeven/status/1318878038113816577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1318878038113816577%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3%2Ccontainerclick_1&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2020%2F10%2F21%2F21526556%2Fios-14-resets-default-email-browser-apps-after-updates and confirmed by The Verge. After installing iOS 14.1, each time you update your selected third-party email and browser apps, your selections will be removed and reset to Apple Mail and Safari. There’s no easy solution to this, and Apple has to release another iOS update to fix the problem.

That being said, some iOS 14.0.1 bugs allegedly fixed in iOS 14.1 are still affecting users, including sending emails from wrong alias, WiFi performance Problems, broken widgets and Apple Music error. There are also a higher number of reports than usual Battery consumption. It is important to remember that iOS / iPadOS updates after the update will cause higher battery drain for a few days while the device is being re-indexed. I will keep this in mind though.

What would you like to have?

Apple lists the following upgrades and fixes for iOS 14.1:

  • Adds support for 10-bit HDR video playback and edits it in Photos for iPhone 8 and later
  • Resolves an issue where some “widgets”, folders, and icons were displayed at a reduced size on the home screen
  • Fixes an issue where dragging “Widgets” on the “Home Screen” could remove apps from folders
  • Fixes an issue where some emails in Mail were sent from an incorrect alias
  • Addresses an issue that could prevent incoming calls from displaying region information
  • Addresses an issue on some devices where selecting the zoomed view mode and an alphanumeric passcode could result in the emergency button on the lock screen overlapping the text entry field
  • Fixes an issue in which some users could occasionally be unable to download or add songs to their library while viewing an album or playlist
  • Addresses an issue that could prevent the calculator from displaying zeros
  • Fixes an issue in which streaming video could temporarily lower its resolution at the start of playback
  • Addresses an issue that prevented some users from setting up a family member’s Apple Watch
  • Fixes an issue where the Apple Watch case material was displayed incorrectly in the Apple Watch app
  • Addresses an issue in the Files app that could cause some MDM managed cloud service providers to incorrectly display content as unavailable
  • Improves compatibility with Ubiquiti wireless access points

This is an odd feature light update to a ‘major point’ version, and some of the fixes (as mentioned above) don’t work for all. Surprisingly, iOS 14.1 isn’t listed on Apple’s official security page either, so it’s unclear whether the version doesn’t contain security patches or whether the company was late in updating the page. I will update this article when it appears.

Apple iOS 14.1 verdict: stay away

iOS 14.1 fixes several bugs, but it also introduces a widespread bug in resetting third-party browser and default email apps (widely). Those sticking to Apple Mail and Safari may still want to take the plunge, but if you’re already enjoying a largely bug-free experience, there’s no real benefit to upgrading to iOS 14.1. I will update this guide with my final verdict in a week.

Along the road

Apple iOS 14.2 is currently in its fourth beta phase and introduces new emojis, music recognition for the Control Center (think of the built-in Shazam), a revised Now Playing widget, an updated interface for AirPlay (optimized for streaming with multiple devices ) and Apple Map features and support for the upcoming intercom functionality of the HomePod.

Unless iOS 14.2 comes out in the next few weeks, I would expect iOS 14.1.1 to be dealt with quickly to fix the third-party email and browser issues. Watch this room.
