McDonald and Lane are reviewing appeals

Leading jockeys James McDonald and Damian Lane haven’t given up riding for the last two days of the Flemington Carnival after both were banned under special rules in Flemington on Saturday.

Both drivers have until late Monday to appeal any negligent driving bans issued under revised rules that prohibit a jockey banned on Victoria Derby Day or Melbourne Cup Day from using the nine-day postponement rule to take.

Jockeys banned on Derby Day and Cup Day can only postpone their sentences for three days, and both Lane and McDonald did so on Saturday as their suspensions begin after doing their Melbourne Cup rides with McDonald to Finche and Lane have taken to drive King Of Leogrance.

At any other meeting throughout the season, a jockey can postpone a penalty for up to nine days. This was the fallout of the last two Melbourne Cups, which saw numerous whip breaks and interventions that officials deemed necessary were proactive.

In the worst case, a jockey could disregard the rules of the whip and the safety of his fellow passenger for the first two days and still ride through the four-day carnival before receiving the penalty.

Flemington has been the scene of whip violations at major races in the past, with the long home straight often causing riders to get on the whip too early.

Postponement wasn’t the only change on the opening day of Carnival, as stewards introduced higher fines and sizable suspensions for whip overuse.

On Saturday, jockey Fred Kersley was the first to feel the brunt of the stewards’ wrath when he dropped out for ten meetings and fined a whopping $ 10,000 for illegally using whips on Victoria Derby runner-up, Hit The Shot has been.

Kersley’s share of the second prize of $ 360,000 was $ 18,000.

Daniel Moor was later fined $ 1,500 and received a 12-meeting ban for whip overuse at Age of Chivalry in the Cantala Stakes. He made about $ 3,375 for finishing fourth.

Matt Hyland, executive director of the Victorian Jockey’s Association, said Sunday he texted the group of drivers in Flemington to warn the stewards would impose many more punishments for breaking whips during the carnival.

All 24 Melbourne Cup jockeys will be re-informed Tuesday morning that they are risking severe penalties for overusing the whip to be tried by the stewards to defuse the controversy that has erupted in the last two Melbourne Cup races.
