BREAKING: Denis Pagan, North Melbourne’s premier coach, won the Victoria Derby with Johnny Get Angry – his very first Group 1 competitor and the great AFL coach’s first runner, when he started his training career just six months ago.
And to make things even sweeter, Pagan owns the horse himself after buying it for just £ 50,000 – and will pocket the first prize of around $ 1.2 million!
The inexperienced jockey Lachlan King was the man leading the victorious three-year-old in the 2500-meter race for stayers.
Hit the Shot was second ahead of the favorite Young Werther.
When asked how it was compared to winning an AFL Grand Final, a shocked Heath said, “It’s ten times better right now.”
“It’s an incredible feeling. I found it reluctant, handled it well. Had a good lunch yesterday, probably too much to drink, and wasn’t expecting it. ”Victorious jockey Lachie King said, “To be honest, I can’t thank him (Pagan) enough. It was the best thing that ever happened in my career. You know I wasn’t that good six years ago. This horse is only – six months ago. This horse kept me up in the morning, it was so easy and I can’t explain the feeling. It’s incredible.”
