CONOR McGREGOR could fight Dustin Poirier at WELTERWEIGHT. His trainer John Kavanagh said it was “a pleasure” to see him in training.

A rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov or a clash against provisional lightweight champion Justin Gaethje was his first choice.

In recent weeks, however, a comeback against 31-year-old Poirier has emerged as the most likely option, with the couple appearing to “agree” on social media.

Poirier has lost five times in the UFC and has something in common with McGregor as both were submitted by Nurmagomedov.

And of course it would be a rematch – McGregor beat Poirier by punches in 2014 with a first-round win.

McGregor has continued his MMA training and his trainer Kavanagh is excited to see what the future holds.

He tweeted, “Seeing @TheNotoriousMMA rounds of MMA lately has been a real joy and education.

“Flowing movement with timing and skill at the elite level.

“Dustin has improved so much since the first meeting that Conor has improved a lot more.

“It will be fascinating to see her hydrated and healthy at 170.”

But one fan wasn’t very happy and asked the Irish coach why the pair couldn’t fight 155 pounds and light weight.

Kavanagah tweeted back, “What possible interest do you have in watching two guys spend 170 hours slicing 48 hours to 155, only to get back to 170 immediately after the scales.”

“Are you a fighting fan or have a strange interest in seeing dehydrated men in their underwear?”

The fight is scheduled for January 23rd, and The Notorious would like the fight to take place at the Dallas Cowboys home – AT&T Stadium – which can hold up to 105,000 people.

McGregor also announced that he would then face Manny Pacquiao to return to the boxing ring.

However, it is unclear whether a highly anticipated rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov is planned for 2021.

The Russian’s recent explosion at McGregor, where he said the 32-year-old Irish man drinks too much, is not focused, and smashes old people, could bring this delicious rematch closer.
