Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah won the Dakar Rally for the fourth time in the car category, on Friday, while Britain’s Sam Sunderland won the motorcycle category for the second time.

Al-Attiyah was crowned the famous race title when it was held in South America in 2011, 2015 and 2019 with the Volkswagen, Mini and Toyota teams, respectively.

Al-Attiyah advanced in the general classification over the French Sebastien Loeb (Prodrive) by 27 minutes and 46 seconds, while the Saudi Yazeed Al-Rajhi came third by one hour, one minute and 13 seconds.

“The feeling today is incredible. We are very happy,” Al-Attiyah said after his coronation.

On the other hand, Loeb was not upset with the result, saying, “At the beginning we thought it was over for us (he lost about 30 minutes in the second stage), but we struggled and managed to finish second, so we had a good race.”

Al-Attiyah, 51, succeeded in winning two stages during the rally in addition to the preliminary stage, and none of his main rivals, the veteran Stefan Peterhansel or the Spaniard Carlos Sainz, managed to pose any threat to his lead.

Al-Attiyah equaled the number of titles in the Dakar Rally with Finn Ari Vatanen, but he is still far from the record set by Peterhansel with 8 titles.

In the motorcycle category, Britain’s Sam Sunderland (KTM) won his second title in Dakar after winning his first title in 2017.

Sunderland advanced over Chile’s Pablo Quintania (Honda) and Austria’s Matthias Falkner (KTM).

The famous race was launched in 1978 between the French capital and Dakar, the capital of Senegal, but he left the continent for security reasons in 2009. The race is currently being held in Saudi Arabia after its residence in South America.

And this year’s edition of the race, which moved to Saudi Arabia in 2020, is the 44th edition.
