Marcos de Souza Pimenta, in charge of the police, told the press that 10 people had been confirmed dead so far.

The ages of the victims, who are Brazilians, ranged between 14 and 68 years, according to the preliminary elements of the investigation.

At midday Saturday, a large boulder broke off and fell onto three boats sailing in Lake Furnas, known for its green waters and picturesque rock walls.

Pictures on social media showed the moment the rocky block separated and fell on the three boats, causing panic among passengers who were watching what was happening on other boats.
