Mainland Portugal will be affected from the afternoon of this Thursday and until Saturday by strong wind, precipitation, snow, sea agitation and drop in temperature associated with the passage of the Dora depression, the IPMA reported.

In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) states that the Dora depression, which is associated with a cold surface, will be felt from the afternoon of Thursday and cross the entire territory during the day of Friday.

The Civil Protection therefore issued a list of precautions to take into account during the passage of this depression.

Read the recommendations:

“To guarantee the clearance of rainwater drainage systems and the removal of aggregates and other objects that can be dragged or create obstacles to the free flow of water;

Adopt defensive driving, reducing speed and taking special care with the possible formation of water and ice sheets on the roads;

Do not cross flooded areas, in order to prevent the dragging of people or vehicles to open holes in the pavement or sewage boxes;

Avoid circulation on roads affected by snow accumulation and when this is not possible, adopt the following measures:

Checking the condition of the tires and their pressures;

Transport and placement of snow chains in vehicles;

Ensure the fuel supply at levels that allow alternative routes to be traveled or the vehicle remains in operation for long periods of time, in case of retention on the affected roads;

Ensure that vehicle heating systems are in good working order;

Provide adequate food in quantity and characteristics, as well as medicines, according to the number and type of vehicle occupants;

On roads affected by snow accumulation, travel with children, the elderly or people with special needs is not recommended;

Avoid driving on those roads with heavy vehicles, in particular articulated vehicles, vehicles with a trailer and rear-wheel drive vehicles;

Ensure an adequate fixation of loose structures, namely, scaffolding, placards and other suspended structures;

Take special care when circulating and staying near wooded areas, paying attention to the possibility of falling branches or trees, due to stronger wind;

Be especially careful when circulating along the coast and riverside areas historically more vulnerable to rapid flooding;

Do not practice activities related to the sea, namely sport fishing, water sports and walks by the sea, avoiding the parking of vehicles on the seafront;

Be attentive to weather information and indications from Civil Protection and Security Forces. ”
