New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there is a big reason she is not ready to return the favor as more states and territories open their borders to travelers from all over the Trench.

Speaking to Newstalk ZB on Monday, Ms. Ardern said she still had some confusion about Australia’s internal borders and each state’s COVID-19 border control management systems.

“One of the things we asked for is just clarity about how these internal borders work,” she said on Monday.

The one-way travel bubble between New Zealand and parts of Australia began on October 16. NSW, the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria have all now opened their borders to allow New Zealanders to travel without quarantining arrival.

The big problem with the precautions, however, is the countermovement that requires all travelers flying to New Zealand to be quarantined for another two weeks.

Ms. Ardern said that despite the seemingly low number of locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in Australia, the introduction of a two-way bubble is still a long way off.

“We did not have full community transmission periods in some of these states and that is still our threshold,” said Ms. Ardern.

“We want to make sure we’re doing this right.”

Ms Ardern said that while her country would consider introducing a travel bubble with parts of Australia, she had previously advised her of a 28-day threshold before making any decisions.

On Monday, Victoria again recorded no new cases and no new coronavirus deaths.

The state has now recorded no cases or deaths from coronavirus for 10 days – a massive milestone after emerging from lockdown to contain a second wave of infections.

As of Sunday, NSW Health recorded no new cases of locally acquired COVID-19 in the most recent reporting period. The result follows two days in which cases have occurred in the southern highlands with no known links to the source of infection.
