Two gunmen were arrested Thursday near the Philadelphia Convention Center in Pennsylvania, where the vote counting that could decide the presidential election is taking place, local police said today.
The detainees, aged 42 and 61, traveled from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to that location in a Hummer vehicle and without a gun license in Pennsylvania, officials added.
According to AP news, the two men were arrested after the FBI in Virginia alerted the Philadelphia police about the detainees’ plans.
Police officers stopped the men on the street a block from their vehicle, explained Philadelphia police commissioner Danielle Outlaw.
The 61-year-old man was in possession of a 9 mm ‘Beretta’ gun and the 42-year-old man had a 40-caliber ‘Beretta’, he added.
A machine gun with no serial number and ammunition was found inside the vehicle.
A woman accompanying the two men was not detained, Attorney General Larry Krasner said.
These arrests call attention at a time when tensions are increasing in the US presidential elections, but the authorities have warned against an excessive reading of the situation.
There is no evidence of further involvement in this case or that the men belong to any extremist group, and the reason for their trip to Philadelphia has not been disclosed.
