The Wall Street Journal quoted two informed sources as expecting that the administration, on Friday, will impose sanctions on one of Hezbollah’s Christian allies in Lebanon, in an attempt to ease the party’s grip on power.

An American official and another person familiar with the plan told the newspaper that the United States was preparing to punish former Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, whom it described as a “strong ally”, for helping his main ally, Hezbollah, which is loyal to Iran.

Exercising pressure on Iran and its allies has been a major focus of the Trump administration.

The decision was approved in principle by Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is expected to unveil the sanctions, before noon Friday, one of the two said.

Treasury officials, as well as a State Department spokesman, declined to comment, to the newspaper.

A person familiar with the upcoming sanctions decision told The Wall Street Journal that blacklisting Basil would “explode the formation of the government.”
