Maradona celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday

Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona underwent a “routine” surgery Tuesday, after suffering a stroke.

Maradona, 60, was transferred to a medical center in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on Monday, where he was suffering from anemia and dehydration.

Later, Maradona was transferred to another medical center for the surgery.

His personal physician, Leopoldo Locke, said the operation was “successful”, adding that Maradona endured the operation “well”.

The former player is currently subject to observation.

Before the operation, Locke said that Maradona was “clear-headed, understanding and approving of (surgical) intervention”.

Maradona, the 1986 World Cup winner, is currently coaching the Gymnasia La Plata team, which plays in the Argentine First Division.

Maradona celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday, when he captained his team in a match against Atletico Patronato.

Supporters of Gymnasia La Plata gathered in front of the hospital, carrying messages of support for the Argentine star.

Italian club Napoli, who Maradona helped him while playing in his ranks to win the league twice, posted a message of solidarity with the Argentine star on Twitter.
