Bethesda’s game engine – Creation Engine – will undergo extensive changes before the launch of Starfield of The Elder Scrolls VI. Studio director Todd Howard was able to reveal this this week.

In a lengthy interview with the Develop: Brighton conference (via Gamesindustry.biz), Howard pointed out that the engine is always refurbished with each launch of a new game. He admitted, however, that major changes have been necessary this time than before, and the developer has added all the cloths to carry out the overhaul.

– We have more people working with the game engine now – five times as many – than we probably ever had. So engine overhaul is the biggest we’ve ever done, maybe bigger than [spranget fra] Morrowind to Oblivion, Howard explained.

As for the changes, the Bethesda chief was careful not to divulge too much of what was going on behind the scenes. However, he hinted at significant changes for both animations and the way the engine generates everything from landscapes to figures. All this will then be put into operation in the developer’s two long – awaited big games.

– It has taken us more time than we had hoped, but it will drive everything we do with Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI. When people see the results, they will hopefully be as happy as we are with what is happening on the screen.

Just when fans get to see more, however, Howard could not say anything about. As with Fallout 4, for example, the goal is to share more as the game approaches launch, so that Bethesda can show exactly how the games work without creating confusion or false hopes.

Otherwise, Howard published the story of both The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. He also talked about Skyrim’s tenth anniversary next year, as well as problems with, and fixing, Fallout 76. You can see the interview in its entirety in the video below.
