A man survived a house fire that destroyed his home in Brisbane overnight after his parrot sounded the alarm before smoke alarms went on.

The house on Salstone Street at Kangaroo Point was on fire when the crews arrived just after 2 a.m.

Resident Anton Nguyen said he was lucky to escape unharmed after his bird, Eric, warned him of the danger.

“I heard a bang and Eric – my parrot – started screaming, so I woke up and smelled some smoke,” he said.

“I grabbed Eric, opened the door and looked at the back of the house and saw some flames.

“And so I packed my bag and ran off and ran down the stairs.”

He said he didn’t hear his smoke alarm.

“I’m shocked, but I’m fine,” he said.

QFES inspector Cam Thomas said the parrot screeched, “Anton! Anton! ”To make Mr. Nguyen aware of the danger.

“A gentleman was sleeping at the time,” he said.

“He heard a big bang and his parrot, Eric, actually warned him to get out of the building and they both got out safely.

“There were smoke alarms [but] The bird gave a warning before the smoke alarms went off. “

Acting inspector Thomas said the crews did well to contain the fire on just one property.

“The fire devoured the entire premise pretty well, with exposures on the left side that needed protection with some bubbles on the outside,” he said.

A crime scene has been declared and fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.
