Portugal registered an additional 3062 cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours and 37 more deaths, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) of this Sunday (November 1).

More positive numbers than the previous day, when 4007 new cases and 39 deaths had been registered, but on Sunday, smaller numbers of cases are usual. Last weekend, there were also about 1,000 fewer new cases between Saturday and Sunday. The worst day of the pandemic was last Friday, with 4656 cases and 40 deaths.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 144,341 cases and 2544 deaths have been recorded. This Sunday there are 1491 more recovered, having already 81 771 people who passed the covid-19. There are 60 026 active cases, 1534 more than in Saturday’s bulletin, and 291 more contacts under surveillance by the authorities, in a total of 64 805.

There are over 150 people hospitalized, with 2122 now being hospitalized, with two less in intensive care (284).

It is in the North that the increase in cases is greater: since Saturday’s bulletin, there are 1616 more cases, with the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley presenting almost half of that value (plus 876 cases). In the Center there are 430 more, in the Alentejo there are 74 more, in the Algarve there are 59 more, in Madeira another six and in the Azores one more.

In relation to the dead, 20 are counted in the North, 12 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, three in the Center and two in the Alentejo. Of the 37 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, 24 relate to elderly people over 80 years old, with nine in the age group from 70 to 79 and two in the age group from 60 to 69 and another two between 50 and 59.

First death in Madeira

The numbers in the bulletin do not yet include the 97-year-old woman, the first victim of covid-19 registered in Madeira, who died this Sunday.

The woman, with several associated comorbidities, had been hospitalized “since October 27, the day on which the diagnosis of this disease was confirmed”, according to the authorities, mentioning that “the death was verified during this dawn”.

New measures

On Saturday, Prime Minister António Costa announced new measures to tackle the pandemic, which will take effect on Wednesday, with a new state of emergency on the table.

Costa revealed that the confinement that currently covers three northern counties (Felgueiras, Lousada and Paços de Ferreira) will be extended to another 118 counties – thus making 121, covering 70% of the Portuguese population.
