A 25-year-old woman who fell from a carnival ride in Far North Queensland yesterday is in critical but stable condition in the hospital.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 pm at the Cairns Exhibition Grounds in Parramatta Park.
The woman fell from a ride called The Hangover – a two-armed ride that swings people through the air – and suffered serious injuries.
She was treated on site by the Queensland Fire, Ambulance and Paramedics before she was taken to Cairns Base Hospital.
Ian Allen, president of the Cairns Show Association, said the event will be run by an independent third party.
“The event there was not run by the Cairns Show Association,” he said.
“It was hired by an independent group called Showfest. We rented the floor to them. “
The ABC has asked the Showfest organizer for a comment.
Mr Allen, as President, said he could close the event but was instructed by police that it was not necessary at this time.
“But the [Hangover] Drive may not work, nor the drive next door until they do their investigation, “he said.
He said his thoughts were with the woman and her family.
“Just to have someone who’s definitely going to have an accident, not whether it’s the Cairns Show or anything, but you just don’t want something like that,” he said.
“I just want to express my condolences to the family there … that this tragic accident happened.”
Queensland Police and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.
