After many promises and reversals in recent years, Zambia finally inaugurated its embassy in Morocco during a ceremony held on Saturday in Rabat.

The opening ceremony of this embassy was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and his Zambian counterpart, Joseph Malanji.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Bourita at the end of this ceremony, the Zambian foreign minister said that the opening of a resident diplomatic mission in Morocco is intended to be “To create a concrete basis to support our bilateral relations”.

The Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs also noted that his visit to Morocco aims to “Promote excellent relationships” that bind the two countries.

According to him, “The state of these relations was illustrated through the exchange of visits to all the new ones but also through the opening of the diplomatic representation of Morocco in Lusaka”.

Malanji referred to King Mohammed VI’s state visit to Zambia in February 2017, which was marked by discussions “Fruitful”.

“During this visit, nearly 19 agreements were signed in various fields of cooperation, including diplomatic consultations, economy, science, technology, education, mining, finance and tourism,” he said, welcoming the “Morocco’s constant support for the development of Zambia” through the training of students and the granting of scholarships.

Malanji also noted that his country’s diplomatic representation in Rabat will be strengthened shortly with the inauguration, on October 27, of a consular representation in Laayoune.

For his part, Bourita said that the opening of the Zambian embassy in Rabat follows the opening of the Moroccan embassy in Lusaka in 2018.

The minister recalled the sending, on royal instructions, of aid to the Republic of Zambia as part of the fight against Covid-19, noting that “Zambia is one of the 22 countries which have benefited from this royal solicitude at this difficult time.”
