Pong is the easiest arcade game to play, but if you put it in the right packaging, it can still look great and quickly distract a few friends. That’s exactly what Atari hopes a lot of people will think when the Atari Mini Pong Jr. launches later this year.
The tabletop device was developed in cooperation with UNIS Technology Ltd., based in China. which manufactures a wide range of arcade and entertainment machines. It’s only 12 inches long and uses a 7.9-inch LCD panel to display the game’s table surface. Control is via physical dials. Power is supplied either via a USB cable and an adapter (included) or by inserting three optional rechargeable batteries (AA). In addition to two players, Atari also contained AI to enable single player action in ten difficulty levels.
“We’re excited to work with the creative minds at UNIS to create a new arcade-inspired PONG slot machine for fans,” said Fred Chesnais, Atari CEO. “The Atari Mini PONG Jr. will be available online soon and is the perfect gift for Atari fans and collectors who want to experience the simple but challenging gameplay of PONG in a tangible and immersive way.”
We don’t yet know how much the Mini Pong Jr. machine will cost, but hopefully it’s not ridiculous considering that it just plays pong. Atari also needs to consider the cost of multi-game arcade equipment, such as Sega’s Astro City Mini Arcade Cabinet, which contains 36 games for $ 120. The official unveiling will take place today as part of the UNIS Showcase 2020. Hopefully the price will be announced there and pre-orders will open soon after.
