“On again, off again”: Daryl Maguire has revealed the nature of his relationship with NSW Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian

Former MP Daryl Maguire has admitted a secret love affair with Gladys Berejiklian – describing them as “back in, back out” and revealing that they had planned a future together.

The ex-politician was interviewed by the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) on Thursday afternoon about his relationship with the Prime Minister of New South Wales.

The ICAC is trying to find out what the Liberal leader knew about a land deal in Badgerys Creek, near Sydney’s upcoming second airport.

The investigation found that Wagga Wagga MP at the time, Maguire, was hoping to make up to $ 1.5 million selling land belonging to racing heiress Louise Waterhouse before retiring.

Maguire admitted to ICAC that at the time of a call on September 5, 2017, he and Berejiklian were in a “close personal relationship” in which the then-MP from Wagga Wagga spoke of “doing Badgerys Creek business”.

“We have always been friends,” said Maguire. “But um, it was always on.”

Maguire said their relationship started sometime around ‘2015, 2016’ and ended in ‘August, September (this year) … I can’t be clear’.

He confessed to having spoken to Berejiklian about his “problems in life”, including their possible future together. They had planned to possibly bring their relationship to the public at the time of the 2019 state elections, the investigation said if he would have retired.

When asked if he had told the Prime Minister about his $ 1.5 million debt, Maguire admitted that he may have done so.

“I think in a general discussion I might have brought it up and asked for advice – oh, confirmation of what I did,” he told the investigation.

“That’s my memory, I would have told her.

“I only have a few friends you can discuss these things with, and I might have pulled it past her to get something, uh, uh, to get her point of view.”

ICAC support advisor Scott Robertson asked Maguire after he called Berejiklian where he mentioned “Badgerys Creek Stuff”.

“Let’s take what you explained to Ms. Berejiklian before that September 5, 2017 call, what the Badgerys Creek stuff was?”

Maguire said, “I don’t remember doing it. But according to (transcript) one could assume that. ‚

“Are you doing the best you told her about the Badgerys Creek stuff?” He was asked.

“I do not remember. I just can’t remember what I would have said. ‚

Pressing further, Maguire said, “I don’t know I’ve ever gone into details. It was just a broad discussion material. ‚

Later, Mr. Robertson asked, “I suppose you’ve at least told her that Ms. (Louise) Waterhouse has some relevance to what you would call Badgerys Creek stuff?”

Maguire said, “Maybe so.”

Robertson: Well, maybe or yes?

,I’m not sure. I … I’m just not sure. ‚

The investigation previously revealed how Waterhouse emailed Berejiklian’s personal address about the Badgerys Creek development.

Maguire agreed with Mr. Robertson that he felt he could discuss with the Prime Minister a “potential future for both of you in the future”.

“Yes, in a relationship, yes, that’s right,” he said.

At one point, the attorney who supported ICAC Scott Robertson asked if his relationship with Berejiklian would continue.

“Are you still (in a relationship?)” Asked Mr. Robertson.

“Not after that I wouldn’t be,” he said in a clear reference to the corruption investigation he is in.

The hearing closed to the public just before 1pm and Mr Robertson said it would “intervene in matters that are normally entirely private”.

“I don’t think I would have paid much attention”: Gladys Berejiklian when she called Badgerys Creek to her secret lover Daryl Maguire

After hearing the September 2017 call on “Badgerys Creek Stuff” Monday, the attorney who supported ICAC Scott Robertson asked Premier Berejiklian the following questions:

ROBERTSON: ‘So do you agree that you knew on September 5, 2017 that Mr Maguire had something to do with’ Badgerys Creek Stuff ‘and that if successful, he would be debt free?’

ENJOY: Mr. Robertson, I should have, I don’t think I would have paid much attention to this because I would have assumed that what he was suggesting is quite fanciful and as you note the details are very sparse. So I wouldn’t have paid much attention to what was there. Mmm.

ROBERTSON: Well, you are not saying that it was imaginative, you are saying, “I can believe it” or something, at least with the word “believe” in it.

ENJOY: Yes, but I can’t, yes, but I can’t, I can’t even assure you that I was listening properly or or or just being polite. Yes.

ROBERTSON: I mean, around August and September 2017, the upcoming West Sydney Airport must have been something that, for reasons of public order, was at the top of your mind at the time.

ENJOY: Oh, that was actually the most important thing in our minds a decade ago. I mean that was on the public record as a major problem.

ROBERTSON: But especially in August or September 2017, West Sydney Airport was a matter of concern and concern for you as Prime Minister. Is that correct?

ENJOY: But I, but I wouldn’t say that there was anything special about the development of this topic at the time. This was a major problem, a national public record problem that had been a national public record problem for some time. So I’m not sure why you would think that there was something publicly significant on the subject at this point.

“Red Wine” and a “Visit” to the Prime Minister’s Office

Maguire told the investigation earlier Thursday how he dragged the premier into dealing with fellow real estate developer Joe Alha.

After a pair of red glasses in his parliamentary office on November 15, 2017, Maguire showed Joseph Alha to Berejiklian’s office in the State Parliament in Sydney.

The “drop-in” meeting with Berejiklian lasted a little over two minutes, and all parties exchanged “subtleties”, the former Wagga Wagga MP claimed.

“He loves her and just wants to say hello,” Maguire said of Alha. He informed the investigation that there had been no discussion of Mr. Alha’s planning issues.

The former politician despised the idea that the developer could still carry his glass of wine around when he asked if he could see the prime minister.

“I wouldn’t allow anyone walking around Parliament with a glass of red,” said Maguire – who has admitted receiving cash in his parliamentary office on a cash-for-visa system.

“Or a glass of white?” The attorney who assisted the investigation asked Scott Robertson.

Maguire replied, ‘Any glass. I would disapprove of that. ‚

The lover of NSW Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian, Daryl Maguire, “came” with his property developer Joseph Alha into their office and “exchanged friendships,” according to the investigation

Maguire repeatedly called the Prime Minister “happy” during Thursday’s hearing, but has yet to speak at length about their five-year relationship, which was sensationally exposed this week.

During the February 28, 2018 investigation, Maguire asked the same developer to write an email or letter to Planning Secretary Anthony Roberts and CC in the Premier.

Maguire said to Alha: “You are not stupid, you can write a letter and have it done and then CC the boss and you send it to Roberts.”

“How do I get the boss’s email?” Alha asked.

“I’ll fix it,” said Maguire. “You are currently CC in Gladys Berejiklian.

“You just mail it to Roberts and send me a copy. I will bring it to her. ‚

When asked if he had offered to personally submit Mr Alha’s complaint to the Prime Minister, Maguire said of the investigation: “I said I will bring it to her.”

“Do you remember where you gave it to her?” Mr. Robertson asked.

“No, I do not.”

“Do you remember when this came about … sending a letter to the Minister … to the Prime Minister, did it lead to anything at all?” Mr Roberston asked.

“No, I don’t remember.”

Maguire further admitted that none of its drop-ins or meetings resulted in policy changes or site-specific developments.

“Not to my knowledge,” he said.

Maguire admitted on Wednesday that he had “monetized” his parliamentary position as MP, Parliamentary Secretary and Chairman of the Friends of the Asia-Pacific Committee.

He admitted running a cash-for-visa system from his office and being a secret director of a company, G8way International, that “ultimately” tried to sell off access to the highest levels of government.

Berejiklian has denied any wrongdoing. “I have crammed my personal life,” the Prime Minister said this week.

On Monday the Prime Minister admitted he had a five-year “close personal relationship” with Maguire.

In the pre-investigation material, Berejiklian described him as her “numero uno” – Spanish for number one – and Maguire called her “baby”.

Maguire’s evidence should last until Friday.
