On Wednesday, a federal court in Miami (southern USA) charged an American man and his son with “providing material support to a terrorist organization,” for joining the ranks of ISIS in Syria that they traveled to five years ago when the son was 14 years old.

The two defendants are Jihad Ali (19 years old) and his father Imran Ali (53 years old), who were recently recovered by the United States after they had been detained in Syria since last year after their arrest by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Imran Ali and his son, if convicted of the charges against them, face up to 20 years in prison.

Omran Ali, born in Trinidad and Tobago, obtained US citizenship before traveling in 2015 with his wife and six children to Syria to join the terrorist organization.

According to the indictment, Ali Jihad told FBI investigators last year that at that time he was a young boy “excited to discover a new country and travel.”

He added that the terrorist organization trained it in dealing with weapons and fighting, before forming it into an English-speaking unit.

According to the indictment, the young man “described some parts of his training as wonderful and others terrifying.”

Both defendants participated in the fighting in the ranks of the terrorist organization, and soon a Jihad brother, who was younger than him, joined them, according to the indictment.
