ABU DHABI, 28th September, 2018 (WAM) – The national pavilion of the United Arab Emirates announced that artist, painter and sculptor Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim has been chosen to represent the UAE during the 2022 Venice Biennale, under the supervision of the curator, Maya Allison.
Ibrahim is widely recognized as one of the most prominent experimental artists in the UAE, and he occupies a prominent position as an influential and active member within the advanced artistic community that has established its presence in artistic and cultural history since its formation in the early eighties of the last century.
On the basis of his handicrafts and artistic practices based on the idea of form, Ibrahim responds to his surrounding environment captivating the beauty of the picturesque landscapes in the country.
His work has attracted wide attention, as major institutions have acquired his creative work, including the British Museum, the George Pompidou Center, Sharjah Art Foundation, Art Jameel Center and Barjeel Art Foundation. It should be noted that his works participated in many international artistic forums, including the 2016 Kochi-Muziris Biennial, among others, many individual and group exhibitions around the world.
Maya Allison, Executive Director of the Art Gallery and Chief Curator at New York University Abu Dhabi, will be responsible for supervising and evaluating the exhibition of the UAE National Pavilion, which is being held as part of the 2022 Venice Biennale.
Artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim said: I have been inspired by the coasts of the UAE and its mountain ranges that inspire contemplation in my hometown in Khorfakkan, where my family has settled for many generations … and the uniqueness of the Emirates from others lies in its diverse environment and sophisticated urban features, and from here emanates one of my artistic concepts that Through it, I explore new horizons that my artwork propels me to through the use of organic materials, in order to make way for my subconscious mind to find shapes.
