A powerful suicide bombing on Wednesday killed one and injured more than 60 at an under-construction medical centre near Bagram Air Base north of Kabul.

No US or coalition personnel were reported among the casualties at the main American military facility in Afghanistan, but the medical centre being built for local people was badly damaged according to Colonel Sonny Legget, Resolute Support spokesman. However five Georgian soldiers are among the injured in the attack, according to the Georgian Ministry of Defence via their local media.

Col Legget also said that “enemy forces conducted an attack on Bargram airfield this morning, targeting a medical facility being constructed to help the Afghan people who live near the base”.

Two attackers detonated vehicles laden with explosives at the southern entrance to the base, while five opened fire. The attack was repelled after a 30-minute clash, according to Afghan and NATO officials.

The attackers struck the centre, being built to help the Afghans who live nearby, the US military said.

Earlier reports suggested a US military convoy might have been the target.

No individual or group has so far claimed the responsibility for this attack. A presidential spokesperson claimed the Taliban is responsible for the attack but the group hasn't confirmed that claim.

On Tuesday, Afghan forces intercepted a mini van full of explosives, suicide vests and weapons. A major complex attack on Kabul was thwarted, but the city remains on high alert.

The attack comes as Washington resumed talks with the insurgent force on Saturday, three months after President Donald abruptly halted diplomatic efforts that could end the US's longest war.
