Aden - Yasmine El Tohamy - No casualties were reported.

Some 170 people were evacuated in Umm Al Quwain as a massive fire gutted an old house in the emirate's Al Hamra area on Monday night.

No casualties were reported, said Brigadier Dr Salem Hamad bin Hamda, director of the civil defence department, UAQ Police.

"The central operations room was alerted that a house in the traditional district was engulfed in a big fire at 8.15pm," the officer said on Tuesday.

Firefighters, rescue teams and police patrols were immediately dispatched to the site and evacuated residents.

"It was not an easy job for the firefighters to put out the blaze because of the illegal premises built in the area," he said, adding that the incident was then referred to the entities concerned to determine the cause of the fire.

The civil defence department, in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent Authority, provided all the evacuees with temporary shelter until repairs are completed, Brig Bin Hamda said.

"The public is urged not to crowd around the fire site so that civil defence teams could finish the necessary work as soon as possible," he added.

In October this year, the UAQ firefighters had to evacuate 120 people in another major fire incident that started in an apartment of a residential tower in Al Rawdah area.
