The Ministry of Education has allowed schools to dismiss classes and close for the day if the weather poses a danger, particularly during heavy rains.

Abdullah Saleh, a resident of Dibba, told Al Khaleej Today that some trees had been uprooted by the strong winds.

"The heavy rain and strong winds have smashed window panes and shop signs."

Noor Mustafa, a resident of Kalba area, said some roads - particularly those leading to valleys and low-level areas - were flooded with rain water.

"I did not send my kids to school because of the unstable weather," Mustafa added.

Ashraf Othman, a resident of Khor Fakkan, said the thunderstorm was a common occurrence every year. "The loud thunderclaps and lightning can be scary, apart from the continuous heavy downpour."

According to the ministry's tweet earlier this year, schools are given the decision on whether or not to suspend classes. Additionally, the ministry added that closures are dependent on the road conditions leading to the schools.

Students, administrative and teaching staffs can leave early to avoid getting stuck on flooded roads and valleys.

Recently, heavy rains flooded some houses, and up to 150 people of 20 families had to be moved to hotel apartments.

The Fujairah Police have urged all drivers to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations, and "reduce speed on wet roads and during low visibility."

Kalba Municipality had also warned all consultants and contractors in the city about working in the unstable weather, urging them to "take extra caution and secure their staff, machinery, and ongoing construction works."

The National Ambulance in the northern emirates are geared up to attend to any emergency cases.
