The Sharjah and Ajman Municipalities have deployed emergency teams on all roads to deal with water-logging caused due to rain, which lashed the emirates on Tuesday, December 9, morning. The teams put in huge efforts to remove the accumulated rainwater from roundabouts to ensure smooth movement of traffic.
In Sharjah, the municipality installed signboards warning motorists to focus on driving and avoid driving at a high speed on certain slippery stretches.
Thabet Salem Al Tarifi, director-general of Sharjah Municipality and chairman of the Rain Emergency Committee, pointed out that the civic body is constantly monitoring the weather situation and devising action plans to drain off the rainwater by using pumps and tanks in areas that do not have drainage networks. The teams have been working mostly in areas with severe water-logging to ensure safety of life and property.
He pointed out that the municipality posts awareness messages on social media to warn about the dangers of driving at high speed during rain or fog. Drivers are also made aware about avoiding the mobile phone, especially to photograph rain, and stay focused during driving, he added. "The call center also receives calls from the public at 993 around the clock to deal with all the problems and complaints."
Hassan Al Atefaq, assistant director-general of the agriculture and environment department, said that the emergency teams have been in the field since early Tuesday morning and they are fully equipped to deal with all rain-related issues, especially water stagnation. "The teams coordinate with the relevant authorities and join hands to face rain challenges, while finding out solutions."
In Ajman, AbdullRahman Al Nuaimi, director-general of Ajman Municipality, said that the teams at department of roads and Infrastructure went on their toes to remove water-logging from roads on Tuesday.
The municipality raised its degree of readiness to deal with all observations and reports via the hotline on the toll-free number 80070.
Al Nuaimi pointed out that the municipality formed 15 teams for emergency cases to monitor and follow up rainwater drainage throughout the emirate. The municipality pressed into action 65 mobile pumps and 25 water tanks to drain out rainwater.
Mohammed Ahmed bin Omair Al Muhairi, executive director of infrastructure development sector, confirmed that the municipality has developed an integrated plan to deal with issues related to downpour. The emergency teams did a marvellous job to reduce the impact of rainfall, he added.
