Aden - Yasmine El Tohamy - The same raid was launched by the Department of Economic Development in earlier.

The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has launched an intensive campaign to ban and seize all tea and coffee flasks that contain carcinogenic asbestos.

The move is aimed at ensuring consumer protection and comes following reports of hazardous impact of such flasks, pointed out Dr Abdulrahman Alshayeb Alnaqbi, director-general of the Ras Al Khaimah department of economic development. "These flasks pose a grave risk to people's health." Raids will be carried out from Sunday.

The inspection campaign will cover all outlets and markets of the emirate to ensure that they are free from these heath hazardous flasks. "All asbestos-containing flasks will be confiscated," the official warned.

"The campaign is in line with the directives of the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA)."

Alnaqbi said they had undertaken similar raids to seize all asbestos-containing flasks from the markets of Ras Al Khaimah in July this year. "Large amounts of such flasks were seized and later destroyed," he underlined.

"The department spares no effort to ensure the high quality of all the products available in the markets of the emirate and has carried out many inspection campaigns in collaboration with the ESMA."
