Blind camera test works out badly for iPhone SE and iPhone...

It’s almost a tradition: MKBHD’s blind smartphone camera test. Also this year, two iPhones participated, which are doing very badly.

Read on after the ad.

Blind iPhone cameratest

The concept is simple: sixteen smartphones from 2020 take exactly the same photo under the same conditions and these snapshots are shared anonymously on social media. Thousands of people then voted for their favorite photo, without knowing which smartphone it was taken with.

Although the iPhone has been known as an excellent camera smartphone for years, Apple’s smartphones have always been voted out in the first round. Still, we had high hopes for MKBHD’s test of 2020. With the iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple has released its best camera yet, which was rewarded left and right with prizes and sky-high numbers.

Still, all those advanced functions will not have the desired effect in 2020 either. Both the iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (the two iPhones that participated this year) were voted out in the first round. The new iPhone SE was beaten by the Moto Edge + and the iPhone 12 Pro Max lost out to the OnePlus 8T. The winner of the test is the Zenfone 7 Pro, which beat the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra in the final.

How can iPhones score so low every year?

In the video (which we recommend to watch) Marques Brownlee explains how the test worked. For example, only the automatic settings were used and were not edited later.

The test also shows what things people pay attention to when voting for their favorite photo. For example, the cameras of iPhones capture a lot of details and want to display the image as faithfully as possible. But sometimes a (cheaper) smartphone that shows warmer colors is more popular.
