The MacBook Air with the M1 chip outperforms the 16-inch MacBook...

Apple introduced its first Macs with the Apple Silicon “M1” chip, which brings the ARM architecture to the Mac with improved performance and energy efficiency. While the company said the M1 chip is more powerful than most PC processors, a new benchmark test found that the new MacBook Air with M1 chip can beat any 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel processors .

An independent analysis by AnandTech has already argued that the M1 chip actually has the potential to be the fastest laptop CPU on the market, and the new benchmark results seem to prove it. The new MacBook Air with M1 chip scored 1687 in the single-core and 7433 in the multi-core test.

For comparison: The high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro model with an Intel Core i9 processor achieves 1096 single-core and 6870 multi-core models. The fact that the M1 chip in a MacBook Air performed better than an Intel Core i9 processor in both single-core and multi-core processors seems extremely encouraging.

The benchmark results also showed that the M1 8-core chip has a base frequency of 3.2 GHz, while the 8-core Intel Core i9 processor of the 16-inch MacBook Pro runs at 2.3 GHz and Turbo Boost up 4.8 GHz runs.

There are also other interesting comparisons that can be made with these results. For example, the M1 chip offers similar performance to the entry-level Mac Pro 2019 – at least based on Geekbench results. Mac Pro achieved 1024 points in the single-core and 7989 points in the multi-core area. The numbers also confirm that the M1 chip is faster than any chip Apple has ever made for the iPhone or iPad.

According to Apple, the M1 chip is the same for all Mac models updated this week, including the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. However, both the MacBook Pro and Mac mini have an internal fan, while the MacBook Air doesn’t. This can help these other two models perform even better.

Now it’s only a matter of time before similar tests are run on the new M1 MacBook Pro and Mac mini.
