Since its first debut, Google has touted that Stadia can enable features that are not possible on non-cloud platforms. One of these features, State Share, is to be expanded by integrating it directly with Stadia’s screenshot and video capture capabilities.

About APK Insight: In this ‘APK Insight’ post, we decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs in the case of Android apps) we can see different lines of code in this hint of possible future functionality. Be aware that Google may or may not never ship these features, and our interpretation of the features may be incomplete. We will try to enable those close to graduation to show you what they will look like when they ship. With that in mind, read on.

Share status in screenshots

In Stadia today, you can use the official Stadia controller to take full quality screenshots and videos on the server side instead of capturing your stream which would have more compression artifacts. For now, the only way to share these recordings is to download them from the Stadia web app. However, a more direct way to share these has been in the works for some time.

In Stadia for Android version 2.42, Google found a way to connect State Share – a feature that allows you to jump to a specific location in a Stadia game – directly to screenshots and videos captured by Stadia.

It’s too early to say exactly how games will use this feature, but with Crayta – a Stadia exclusive way of creating games and games that others have created – and currently the only game / app, State Share supported – as a basis. We envision that if you take a screenshot or video of a particular game in Crayta like Prop Hunt, someone who later watches that shot can use the State Share link to jump straight to Crayta in Prop Hunt .

This is just one of the many ways Google is working to improve capture, as Stadia 2.36 suggested that you can include your voice in recorded video clips.

Setup instructions for third-party controllers

In the Stadia app for Android, the controller button in the upper right corner is used only to initialize a new Stadia controller on your network or to pair it with your phone. With Stadia 2.42, Google is apparently preparing detailed connection instructions to make playing Stadia on Android easier with an Xbox or PlayStation controller.

Specifically, Stadia provides instructions on how to connect the official Xbox Wireless Controller and Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller, as well as the Sony DualShock 4, via Bluetooth or USB.

Connect your Xbox Wireless Controller using Bluetooth or a compatible USB cable.

To use Bluetooth, activate pairing mode by pressing and holding the Pair button for 3 seconds.

Connect your Xbox Adaptive Controller using Bluetooth or a compatible USB-C cable.

To use Bluetooth, activate pairing mode by pressing and holding the Pair button for 3 seconds.

Connect your DualShock 4 controller via Bluetooth or a compatible micro USB cable.

To use Bluetooth, activate pairing mode by pressing and holding the PS and Share buttons at the same time. The light bar on the back of the controller starts to flash as soon as the pairing mode is active.

Go to Bluetooth settings on your device and enable Bluetooth. Search for new devices, then select your controller.

Other controllers or gamepads may also work with the Stadia by connecting via Bluetooth or USB. Contact the manufacturer of your device for information about gamepad compatibility.

Messaging (again)

For the past few months we’ve seen Google work continuously to add messaging functionality to the Stadia app, including an onboarding process that introduces players to how to send messages. With Stadia 2.42, we’re seeing more texts indicating that Google is even closer to launching the feature.

Stadia Pro without a payment method

To sign up for a free trial of Stadia Pro, you’ll need to give Google a credit card or other payment method that will be charged after your trial ends if you don’t cancel. In order to give potential players the chance to try Stadia Pro without any commitment – which can be especially important as many may not be sure whether their connection is good enough to stream games – Google Stadia may be preparing a way, Stadia try out pro without a credit card.

Throughout the app’s code, we find references to “fopless” tests, which we assume to represent “Form of Payment (FOP) less” test versions. In the text below, you’ll look like you’re enjoying Stadia Pro for a shorter period of time with these “fopless” tests before you have to “add a payment method later” to unlock the rest of the usual 30-day trial. Unfortunately we do not know how long these attempts will take, as the following text is filled in with a certain amount of time.

Later, add a payment method to continue your trial.
