Among us, developers try to prevent a hack from disrupting games

For the past few days, Among Us players have been regularly encountering a hack that fills lobbies with bots that repeatedly spam the same message, making everything that players leave in a black room disappear, and eventually disconnecting them from the game. The messages contained various versions of similar text, usually telling players to subscribe to the hacker’s YouTube channel, “Otherwise we’ll kill your device,” followed by a link to Discord or Twitter unsubscribing “Trump 2020”.

Developer Innersloth released an emergency server update to resolve the issue and recommended that players, “Please play private games or with people you trust !!!” People kept watching the hack, now with messages like “You’re crazy I’m back” and “Paid by Putin from Russia”. A second round of corrections followed and the back and forth is likely to continue.

Both Eurogamer and Kotaku contacted the hacker in question, who told Eurogamer that they were designing and selling in-game cheats, viewing this as a “publicity stunt” believed to have influenced 1.5 million games. When they talked to Kotaku they sounded like simple trolling and said, “The anger and hate is the part that makes it fun. If you are interested in a game and ready to play spam you don’t like random guy on the internet because you can’t play it for 3 minutes, it’s stupid. ”

The hacker has since been doxxed, and his name and address have been published on Twitter.
