Marvels Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Insomniac Games)

Insomniac’s Spider-Man Follow-up is a more focused (i.e. shorter) adventure that sees Morales gain a foothold as a debut web slinger while spreading a battle between a tech company and a criminal organization. With haptic feedback via the DualSense controller as well as support for the PS5’s 3D audio engine, this will be a major draw for early adopters.

Astros Playroom (Japan Studio)

This cute platformer installs for free on any PS5 and is a sequel to the well-received PSVR title Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Like The Playroom, which came pre-installed on PlayStation 4 for the introduction of Dualshock 4 and PlayStation Camera, it is designed to familiarize gamers with the capabilities of the PS5 and its DualSense controller.

Demon’s Souls (Bluepoint Games / Japan Studio)

The long-awaited remake of From Software’s masterful action RPG adventure – the cult predecessor of the legendary Dark Souls series. It has been sprayed from the ground up by specialist developer Bluepoint Games, with vibrant graphics, dynamic lighting, and the promise of new weapons and features.

Do you remember Destruction Derby, the early smash and crash racer on the original PlayStation? Well, Destruction Allstars may be its spiritual successor, a combo vehicle and arena fighting game developed by former employees of two legendary British studios: Psygnosis and Project Gotham developer Bizarre Creations. Definitely one for Rocket League fans.

Sackboy: A Great Adventure (Sumo Digital / XDEV)

This is a welcome new outing for the lovable hero of Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series. It is a 3D platform adventure in an open world that allows up to four players to explore together. It’s another bibliographic set that will help you get the most out of the DualSense controller as players interact with the quaint crafting environments.

Devil May Cry 5: Sonderausgabe (Capcom)

The stylish supernatural brawler returns with higher frame rates and support for real-time ray tracing. Capcom has also added the hybrid demonic-human warrior Virgil as a playable character, as well as some wild new game modes to harness the machine’s ability to throw tons of monsters onto the screen at once.

Assassins Creed Valhalla (Ubisoft)

The latest in Ubisoft’s line of cross-timed open world adventures is the Viking attacker Eivor, who storms through 9th century England, killing locals and building settlements. Certainly a graphic showcase for the new consoles.

The Pathless (giant squid / Annapurna)

From the creators of the ethereal subaquatic adventure Abzû comes another mystical search, this time for a hunter and his eagle who tracks down cursed spirits on an enchanted island.

Fortnite (Epic Games)

The Battle Royale mega-seller doesn’t need to be featured and has always been a likely next-gen launch title – but developer Epic Games is making an effort to support ray tracing and faster frame rates. Players can also upgrade their characters and progress over previous versions.

Observer: System Redux (Bloober Team)

Originally released in 2017, this dark cyberpunk thriller has been completely redesigned by developer Bloober Team, adding 4K textures, HDR lighting and, yes, ray tracing. With the late Rutger Hauer as the disheveled protagonist Daniel Lazarski, it could be the cult hit of the start phase.

Godfall (gear)

Described by Gearbox as “a one-of-a-kind looter, slasher, melee, action RPG,” Godfall lets you play a mythical warrior, bludgeon enemies and earn new gear in the process. The focus is on stylish offensive play and a co-op mode lets friends take on the bloodshed together.

Just Dance 2021 (Ubisoft)

With 40 new tracks including songs by Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Camila Cabello, Ubisoft’s hyperactive, super-accessible dance simulation will get a PS5 version to launch, but there is no word on advanced features.

Dirt 5 (Codemasters)

The off-road racing simulation gets an improved version for PlayStation 5, including the option to play at a scorching 120 frames per second. The update is free for those who buy the PS4 version in October.

Fifa 21 (electronic art)

Fifa 21 promises a new dynamic attack system, deeper career mode, and expanded Volta football mode, and offers a free upgrade to the next generation if you buy it on current consoles. Expect improved graphics, faster load times, and improved player models and animations.

Bugsnax (young horses)

The unexpected, meme-friendly hit of Sony’s Future of Gaming event in June, Bugsnax is an unusual adventure that sees players explore an island full of collectable insects that also make delicious snacks – much like gourmet Pokémon. Created by the makers of the cult hit Octodad, it will be one of the more idiosyncratic offerings on the start menu.

Marvels Rächer (Square Enix)

Square Enix ‘action role-playing game Punch-’em-up will be released on current platforms in August and will receive a next-generation makeover that is free to download for owners of the original game. The developer promises faster loading times, improved resolution and improved textures, as well as the destruction of armor. Cross-platform co-op play allows you to team up with friends on Xbox One.

Upcoming PS5 exclusive

After launch day, Sony spiced up four major first-party projects: a new God of War adventure, Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Some of the key exclusive third-party vendors coming next year include: Final Fantasy XVI; the picturesque storytelling adventure Project Athia from Square Enix; roguelike third-person shooter return from genre specialist Housemarque Games; trippy multiplayer assassination quest, deathloop; and the paranormal first-person fear festival, Ghostwire: Tokyo by Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks.

Backward Compatibility

Playstation 5 is fully compatible with most PS4 games, whether they are discs or digital downloads. Games should benefit from higher frame rates and resolutions. Playstation Plus service subscribers who purchase a PS5 get instant access to the PlayStation Plus collection, a curated selection of PS4 titles such as God of War and Persona 5. For older titles, PS5 is currently incompatible with Playstation 1, 2 or 3 games but retro titles available on the PlayStation Now streaming service should work on PS5.
