Tesla is updating the interior of the Model 3 to allow owners to lock their Sentry Mode / TeslaCam storage device in the glove compartment.

Sentry Mode is Tesla’s built-in surveillance system in its vehicles that uses the autopilot cameras around the car to record potential vandalism or other incidents.

Tesla owners need to plug a storage device into one of the USB ports in the center console and the footage recorded in Sentry mode and TeslaCam, the automaker’s dashcam feature, are saved on it.

The feature first started after thieves, particularly in the Bay Area, targeted Tesla vehicles. This left a torrent of cars with broken windows and missing valuables.

It helped police catch thieves, but some were concerned that thieves could overtake the system and steal the storage device containing the footage of the break-in.

Now we learn that Tesla is rolling out a solution with the new Model 3 update 2021 that we reported on in the past few days.

Tesla has updated the glove box to now have a USB port in the top left corner. This can be seen from a picture of Electrek’s updated design.

The new port will connect to the Tesla MCU and allow Tesla owners to use a storage device such as a portable SSD to record Sentry Mode and TeslaCam events.

Tesla recently started to release a new software update with the new “Glovebox PIN” function.

In Model 3 and Y vehicles, there is no physical button to open the glove box and the driver must open it using a command on the center touchscreen.

With the new feature, everyone has to enter a PIN code to open the glove box.

By combining the updated 2021 Model 3 design with these new features, Tesla owners can now secure their Sentry Mode / TeslaCam storage device in a locked glove box.

Electrek’s Take

This is a very cool update and something I suspected as I covered in my report on the Model 3 Center Console 2021.

The fact that the phone charger is now integrated into the center console with no easy access underneath where the current USB ports are located had to be a different solution for the storage device.

I think that’s very clever.

For current Model 3 and Model Y owners, you still have the option to purchase the Jeda USB Hub, which allows you to hide the storage device in a seamless hub that looks like it’s part of the car, while also having more ports receive.

We’re starting to find out that there are a lot more changes to the Model 3 with the 2021 update. We will have more to report in the coming days as we can confirm more.
