Egypt won the 1959 edition in Cairo 2-1 over Sudan with a double by Essam Bahij, while Siddiq Mohamed scored for Sudan.

The Egyptian team crowned the title after winning 4 points from two matches, while Sudan came in second with two points, then Ethiopia was third without credit.

In 1970, the Sudanese team achieved its only title in the African Nations, in a march that saw the Egyptian team beat the Egyptian team 2-1 in the semi-finals after extra time.

Sudan waited until the 83rd minute to score the first goal through Ahmed Bakheet, but Hassan El Shazly equalized the result after one minute, but Bakheet led Sudan to win with a second goal in the 102nd minute.
