Patrick Lefevere was not happy with the decision of the Vuelta a España jury to relegate Sam Bennett on stage 9. And as is so often the case, the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team manager made his feelings known in a series of posts on Twitter on Thursday.

Lefevere initially posted a tweet celebrating what would appear to have been Bennett’s 50th career win immediately after the stage ended, but his mindset changed after the racing jury decided to relegate Bennett from Trek-Segafredo for relegation to Emils Liepins while battling for position in the sprint. After Bennett shouldered the 28-year-old Latvian, he finished his sprint and crossed the finish line first. Liepins arrived on the 13th.

Bennett then fell back to 110th place in the final ranking, Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) declared the winner. Shortly after that decision was made by the powers that be in the Vuelta, Lefevere returned to Twitter to express his displeasure.

His tweet even tagged the @trak handle which doesn’t seem to belong to anyone associated with Trek Bikes, let alone the Trek Segafredo team.

He followed this tweet with another.

Then Luca Guercilena, manager of Trek-Segafredo, responded to Lefevere’s initial criticism and said the decision was clear to the jury.

To do this, Lefevere challenged both Liepins’ track record and Trek’s leadership qualities. Guercilena wondered, unsurprisingly and understandably, why that was important.

Retweets aside, Lefevere ended his Thursday night with one final message for the many people who joined the discussion on social media.

The driver who was given the descent that day (Bennett) did not post post-stage messages on Twitter, and the driver he was pushing (Liepins) did not leave the discussion to others.

Lefevere’s latest expression of anger on social media comes a little less than three months after another overly physical sprint that resulted in Patrick Lefevere expressing a strong opinion.

On August 6, Fabio Jakobsen from Deceuninck-Quick-Step was seriously injured when he was driven into the barriers by Dylan Groenewegen from Jumbo-Visma on the first leg of the trip to Poland. Lefevere was on Twitter immediately after this stage and demanded that Groenewegen should also be punished after the disqualification that was given to him from the race.

Lefevere described Groenewegen’s sprint as a “very dirty move” and continued to press for legal action in the days following the crash, although he eventually pulled back to insist that Groenewegen be thrown in jail. Groenewegen ultimately had to take a break from his team and will end the season without having raced again since.

Of course, this year’s high-profile relegation rounds aren’t the only topics Lefevere has commented on on Twitter over the years. The long-time team manager has rarely shied away from expressing his opinion publicly. This recently included criticism of the UCI’s call for an investigation into the nature of an unknown object that was pulled from Remco Evenepoel’s shirt pocket after its crash in Il Lombardia.

Last year he threatened to pull his team out of the Vuelta a San Juan after organizers disqualified Iljo Keisse after a woman filed a police complaint against him saying he had “brushed his genitals” while he was walking posed for a photo with her and his Deceuninck – Quick Step teammates.
