Glen Durrant won his first PDC television title by defeating Nathan Aspinall in the Premier League final

It started in Aberdeen, was put on hold in Liverpool and then continued in Milton Keynes. On Thursday in Coventry, Premier League Darts crowned its master in 2020 after Glen Durrant defeated Nathan Aspinall in a thrilling final.

Three-time BDO world champion Duzza adds the first prize of £ 250,000 to the £ 25,000 he won for leading the standings in the regular season. More importantly, however, his 11-8 success earned him his first PDC television title.

Over 250 days into the tournament’s start, Aspinall and Durrant made it through their semi-finals in the early evening to meet in a first final between two debutants since the opening event in 2005.

Aspinall was too good for reigning world champion Peter Wright, who came down with a great 4-3 breakout to take the initiative he never gave up against the 2017 runner-up. During the opening game of the night, Durrant put an end to Gary Anderson’s hopes for a third Premier League crown and ensured a new name was on the trophy with a win in a playoff in the final leg.

In a thrilling final it was Duzza who won the upper hand. After 36 turbulent weeks, the man whose graduation proved crucial was even able to afford four missed match darts before pinning his favorite double 16 for the title.

After six nights in six cities before the lockdown and ten nights in Milton Keynes, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena was the venue for the tournament instead of a jam-packed O2, but that doesn’t matter to an avid Durrant.

Durrant and Aspinall had both called the occasion the greatest of their careers. Duzza quit his job to go to Q-School in January 2019 and earn his card. He didn’t look back and, like Aspinall, was a “contender” in last year’s tournament, and the chance to become champions beckons both of them.

Both men lost on their once-in-a-lifetime night to impress in 2019 – but after sending proven cast members Wright and Anderson to pack up, neither man wanted to miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Aspinall, who won both meetings in the regular season, caught up with Duzza with the darts and there was nothing when they swapped the first six legs.

Every man missed the chance for an early break from the throw and the tension was palpable as the match remained in the throw. After 5: 5, the story continued after the break. Durrant took the next opportunity to miss two arrows for a break and a 7-5 lead.

He was ruthlessly punished by Aspinall, who won 100 for the highest score of the game and a level competition.

Duzza played in his first PDC television final and ended his four defeats in a row in the PDC semi-finals by sinking Anderson. He held his nose forward before taking the first punch with a crucial break in the 14th leg.

Five missed darts on Asp doubles allowed Duzza to pin double eight for the first two-leg advantage of the final, and when Aspinall missed a dart to break straight back, Durrant brought 127 out, three clear and in move by two of the title.

Aspinall held on to clean up 96 but was compared by Durrants 72.

Unlike the first semi-final, Aspinall and Wright had a high profile affair with three big placements and two averages greater than 94.

Wright hit the front early in a seesaw competition. The world champion, who took a 3-1 lead, got lost when a string of missed doubles presented Aspinall with a chance, and as in the past two years, he took this opportunity to get the match on point after eight stages.

In the 4-4 win, a lit Asp secured a pair of 180s en route to a brilliant 11-darts break to take the lead for the first time since the first leg, and he followed with an excellent 138 finish to two get along.

That outbreak proved to be the difference as Wright couldn’t do enough to regain the advantage. Aspinall stayed absolutely solid with a sizzling 141 finish and a suitably classy 13-dart leg that set the seal for victory.

Given the nature of the past few weeks, it was no surprise that Durrant and Anderson started slowly. Although for a couple with five world titles between them, the subdued character of the opening semi-final stayed longer than expected.

Duzza did just enough to take the early advantage and took the 5-2 lead after two breaks. On the first break, an underdog missed Anderson seven arrows for the leg.

Somehow the Scot conjured up a 124 finish to keep in touch and after Durrant missed a dart for a 7-3 lead, it was Anderson headed for a run that lasted with a magical finish Goal seemed to him 9-7 before and in sight of the final.

However, Durrant has a way of doing his best when he needs it most, and when he couldn’t return, he took out a skin-friendly 113, followed by a nervous 64 to force a nervous contest into a decision off the man from Middlesbrough punished Anderson’s four missed match darts and won the biggest prize of his two years in the PDC.
