Paul Waring came up with a creative way to get up and down the rough at the Scottish Championship – by hitting the driver right from the green!

Paul Waring brought forth a moment of creative genius to get out of a difficult situation during the opening round of the Scottish Championship presented by AXA.

The Englishman had made the turn in 32 after finishing his first nine at Fairmont St. Andrews with four back-to-back birdies only to tee off on the eleventh par-3 width of the green and into the rough.

Waring seemed to have little hope of pacing up and down, only to drop his wedge in favor of a driver who hit his ball through the thick grass onto the putting surface.

Waring spawned a contender for inclusion of the day during the opening round on the Scottish coast

His unusual shot selection worked in a way as he stiffened his second stroke to within three feet before rolling the putt for par to continue his flawless start to the round.

“I couldn’t get the club to the back of the ball,” Waring said Sky Sports. “There was a massive fescue tuft behind it, and after that I had a gorse bush.

Otaegui three ahead in Scotland

Report from the opening round at Fairmont St. Andrews, where Adrian Otaegui started well.

“I put the driver in the back of the stance just to try and get him forward. To be fair, me and my caddy looked at it and came to the same conclusion that it was a driver or a three-wood driver. It’s not one. ”We practice every day, but I’m happy to make it!

“I’ve used it from Bermuda grass in Asia. It works pretty well around some of the greens if you can’t hit the club properly on the ball to push it forward. We did it once or twice but didn’t really practice much this week so just surprised I actually hit it, to be fair! ”

Waring added back-to-back birdies from the 14th, but dropped a shot on the 16th before double-spinning the par-3 next, having decided to allow three woods instead of a long iron or wedge use.

“I got a great shot at 17 yards and it rolled all the way down to a muddy divot at the very bottom,” added Waring. “I couldn’t get a wedge on the shot, so I just tried to get three woods up the hill.

“It’s one of those shots that if I hadn’t fully understood I would have ended up at my feet again, which is the number one main sin. So I just guaranteed the strike would try to get him up the hill and obviously hit him a little too hard. ”
