Benfica legend, Nuno Gomes, talked about interest from Egyptian giants Al Ahly during Manuel Jose’s stint with the Red Devils.

Manuel Jose is considered as one of the best manager to take charge of Al Ahly as he led them to multiple consecutive league titles and CAF Champion Leagues.

According to former Portugal international, Nuno Gomes, the Portuguese manager asked him to join the Cairo giants in the mid-2000s.

“Manuel Jose was my coach at Boavista and Benfica and I remember that at one point he talked to me about a possibility to move to Egypt but it never took place and I don’t remember why, ” Gomes told Ontime Sports TV channel.

“During my career I received many offers from many teams and agents, including Al Ahly. I also received offers from Saudi Arabia but I played at my boyhood club, Benfica, and I refused to leave on many occasions.

“If we talk about Manuel Jose we have to talk about El-Gouna manager Pedro Barny and I would to send my greetings as he was my teammates and my coach. He also performed really well as Ismaily coach.

“I’m still in contact with Al Ahly board as well as Pyramids and I have good relations with some people in some Egyptian clubs. I think that there’s a lot of improvement that could still take place especially on the youth level.
