The Blues were actually the better side before the break but fell to their worst ever opening-day defeat in 104 league seasons. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0 NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 (Joelinton 27'): A surprise win for Steve Bruce's side with £40 million [Dh171m] summer signing Joelinton scoring his first goal in English football in August. Sadly for him and Newcastle, that remains the 23-year-old Brazilian striker's only league strike in 29 appearances. Bruce said of his match-winner: "We played him a lot better today, it worked and he will be delighted to get the goal." Getty

NORWICH CITY 3 (McLean 18', Cantwell 28', Pukki 50') MANCHESTER CITY 2 (Aguero 45'), Rodri 88'): A brilliant Norwich performance in September that inflicted a first defeat on champions City since January. Teemu Pukki continued his fine start to the season by scoring his sixth goal against a defence creaking without the departed Vincent Kompany and injured Aymeric Laporte. Norwich City manager Daniel Farke, whose team had been hit by an injury crisis before the match with eight players ruled out, said: "Of course it is a special day for us and for the club, against one of the best teams in the world and when we have so many injuries." WOLVES 2 (Abraham og 69', Cutrone 85') CHELSEA 5 (Tomori 31', Abraham 34', 41', 55', Mount 90'): A clear sign that Frank Lampard's young side could make their mark this season. Striker Tammy Abraham grabbed a hat-trick as Wolves were blown away in front of their own fans in mid-September. "I hope this is my season," said the 21-year-old. They had to settle for a paltry eight in this September massacre. Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores, in only his second game back after being reappointed, said: "First, we have to say sorry to the fans ... after 30 seconds we realised it would be very tough and then after 15 minutes it was impossible to play like this." Villa had not won a Premier League away game in 21 attempts but that run ended thanks to a Norwich defence leaking like a sieve - although 10 injured first-teamers did not help their cause. Wesley, Villa's £22m record signing finally showed some form and was hailed by manager Dean Smith as a "colossus up front" after this early-October massacre. Reuters

BRIGHTON 3 (Maupay 3', Connolly 32', 65') TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0: A catastrophic week in October for Tottenham that saw them lose 7-2 at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, then capitulate badly on the domestic front against Brighton. To compound their misery, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris dislocated his elbow while conceding the first goal. MANCHESTER CITY 0 WOLVES 2 (Traore 80', 90'): Two late blows were gut-punches to the reigning champions, whose grip on the Premier League crown was loosening rapidly by the start of October. They were now eight points behind Liverpool in the title race. Traore's double meant Wolves won at City in the top-flight for the first time since 1979. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: "The performance was a disaster today and I have to apologise and take 100 per cent responsibility - I've never seen a team act like this, there was no fight for anything." ARSENAL 1 (Lacazette 50') BRIGHTON 2 (Webster 36', Maupay 80'): Managerless Arsenal hit a new low with this home defeat in caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg's first home match in charge, a week after the sacking of Unai Emery. Ljungberg said: "We didn't show up in the first half, didn't work hard and want to play." The Gunners were Brighton's third big scalp of the season after Spurs and Everton. EPA

Watford lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with the February victory. Liverpool, though, still held a slight lead at the top of the table of 22 points.
