Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - CAIRO — The Council of the League of Arab States, at its 165th session at the level of foreign ministers, approved the nomination of Egypt’s former foreign minister Nabil Fahmy as secretary-general of the Arab League for a five-year term starting July 1, 2026.

The decision will be submitted to the upcoming Arab summit hosted by Saudi Arabia for endorsement and formal adoption.

The ministerial meeting was held via videoconference and chaired by Bahrain.

Egypt had formally nominated Fahmy to succeed current Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose second term ends on June 30.

The nomination was submitted in an official memorandum by Egypt’s permanent delegation to the Arab League and presented during the ministerial session.

Fahmy is a prominent Egyptian diplomat who served as foreign minister in 2013. He also served as Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008 and was dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo.
