Egyptian tennis player Mohamed Safwat has qualified for the first round of the Australian Open, becoming the first Egyptian to do so since Ismail El-Shafei in 1978.

Safwat’s journey in the Australian Open started when he beat India’s Sumit Nagal in the first round in two sets, 7-6 and 6-2.

He then went on to face France’s Alexandre Muller in the second round and ended up beating him in what was a close game which ended 7-5, 7-5.

In the final qualifying round he beat Russian national Evgeny Donkey 7-5 and 6-4, meaning he reached the tournament’s draw for the first time in his career.

The 172 world ranked will now face Gregoire Barrere in the first round of the tournament on Monday, January 20th at 2:00pm Egypt time.

This achievement comes just months after he became the first Egyptian to reach the Olympic Games in tennis after winning the African games. The event will be held in summer 2020 in Tokyo.
