Jeddah - Yasmine El Tohamy - GENEVA: The president of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, met with UNESCO Director General Khaled El-Enany in Geneva.
The meeting took place during the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, held on the sidelines of the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.
The two reviewed strategic cooperation between the Kingdom and UNESCO in AI and discussed ways to strengthen international partnerships in developing ethical policies for the technology.
Al-Ghamdi praised UNESCO’s international efforts in the field and highlighted the Kingdom’s role in supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He also outlined Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics in Riyadh.
Approved by UNESCO’s General Conference as a Category 2 center under its auspices, the center serves as a global hub for AI research and development, promotes awareness of AI ethics and builds international capacity.
Al-Ghamdi also highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to translate international AI principles into practical initiatives through programs led by the authority.
These include the launch of the AI Ethics Principles, the awarding of AI ethics labels to more than 60 companies across the Kingdom, and the introduction of the National AI Index to measure AI adoption across government entities and support responsible, human-centered innovation.
