Today, Saturday, a Saudi human rights organization announced that the authorities in Riyadh released Princess Basma bint Saud, who had been detained for nearly three years.

“Basma bint Saud and her daughter Suhoud, who have been detained since March 2019, have been released,” the London-based organization, ALQST, a human rights defender in Saudi Arabia, said on Twitter.

The NGO added, “No charges were brought against her at any time during her detention,” denouncing the “negligence” of the Saudi authorities about the health of the princess.

Basma bint Saud, a businesswoman and a person known for her extreme frankness, was arrested before a trip to Switzerland to receive treatment, according to a source close to her family, while the nature of the disease she suffers from was not revealed.

According to her family, Princess Basma, the youngest son of the late King Saud bin Abdulaziz, was known for taking pro-reform stances, and was known for her denunciation of human rights violations in Saudi Arabia.

Princess Basma had sent an appeal to King Salman and his Crown Prince Mohammed in April 2020, demanding her release for health reasons.
