Yemen: The Houthis announce the killing of 8 Saudi soldiers, and...
The Houthi group announced the killing of 8 Saudi soldiers and wounding others, while Saudi media reported that a lieutenant colonel had been killed, while the United Nations called for a halt to the escalation in Hodeidah Governorate.

The Houthi’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, announced that the group’s fighters bombed the “Tadawin” camp in the Ma’rib governorate, where Saudi forces are stationed.

Saree said that the missile killed 8 Saudi soldiers, including commanders, and wounded 7 others.

No official Saudi statement has yet been issued confirming or denying what the Houthis said, but Saudi media announced the killing of a Saudi lieutenant colonel on the battlefield, without specifying the circumstances and location of his death.

On another Yemeni issue, Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, said that the group is keen on what he described as a just and realistic peace, in a way that guarantees the cessation of aggression and the lifting of the blockade, as he put it.

He added that the Houthi group supports the efforts of the United Nations envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths, and that it is open to all efforts and endeavors aimed at stopping the war and addressing its effects, leading to the resumption of correct and sound relations with the countries of the ocean and all countries of the world.

Government formation
On the other hand, Abdul Aziz Jabari, deputy speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, said in a tweet that Saudi Arabia had rejected the names proposed by Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi for the sovereign portfolios in the new government.

Jabbari added in his tweet, “In the sake of the brothers’ sake for the president’s comfort and to preserve his legitimacy, the proposed names have been rejected, and the General Supervisor Al Jaber, after naming the Prime Minister, will select the ministers of the sovereign portfolios, and that the political forces must prepare statements of support and bless these decisions.”

A Yemeni government source had reported that President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi refused to sign the declaration of forming the new government before the Southern Transitional Council implemented the military part of the Riyadh Agreement.

A call to stop the escalation
For its part, the United Nations called on both the legitimate government of Yemen and the Houthi group to exercise restraint and stop the escalation in the coastal province of Hodeidah in the west of the country.

During the past days, confrontations between the forces of the two sides escalated in several areas of the governorate, amid mutual accusations of escalation.

The head of the UN mission in Hodeidah, Abhijit Goha, said in a statement, “We call for restraint following the recent escalation in serious ceasefire violations in Hodeidah governorate.”

“During the past week, air strikes, the use of improvised explosive devices and ground attacks were reported,” he added, adding that the reports of civilian casualties, including children, are particularly disturbing.

Guha stressed that the time has now come for a ceasefire and an end to the spiral of military escalation that will aggravate the dire humanitarian situation on the ground.

The war in Yemen left 112,000 dead, including 12,000 civilians, and 80% of the population, numbering about 30 million, are dependent on aid to stay alive, in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the United Nations.
