RIYADH: The US embassy in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Wednesday, warned its citizens of the possibility of missile and drone attacks today, and called on them to “be on alert.”
The embassy said in a warning statement on its website, transmitted by its documented account on “Twitter”, that it tracks “reports of possible missiles or drones that may be heading towards Riyadh today,” and urged its citizens “to be alert.”
This comes in light of the Houthis escalating their attacks against the Kingdom by launching missiles and drones, most recently on Tuesday, against a Saudi airport in the south of the country.
The statement provided a number of measures that must be taken in the event of such attacks, including “the immediate search for cover in the event of an explosion or the sound of sirens.”
The statement urged American citizens to “remain alert, review immediately, and take the necessary precautions.”
There was no immediate comment from the Kingdom about what the US embassy announced.
However, this month witnessed an escalation of Houthi missile attacks and marches against the kingdom.
On Tuesday, the Yemeni “Houthi” group announced the targeting of an “important target” at Abha International Airport, southern Saudi Arabia, in the third attack within 24 hours.
The Houthis repeatedly fire ballistic missiles, projectiles and drones at Saudi areas, some of which have caused human and material losses, and the group says that these attacks come in response to the ongoing coalition raids against it in separate areas of Yemen.
Yemen suffers from an ongoing war between the pro-government forces and the “Houthi” militants, who have controlled several governorates, including the capital, Sanaa, since 2014.
Since March 2015, an Arab military coalition led by the Saudi neighbor has supported forces loyal to the Yemeni government against the Iran-backed Houthis.
