Xinhua News Agency said the PRSC-EO3 satellite was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China.
The satellite lifted off at 8:15 p.m. Beijing time (1215 GMT) aboard a Long March-6 launch vehicle.
State media said the satellite successfully entered its designated orbit after launch.
The mission marked the 640th flight of China’s Long March rocket series, one of the main pillars of the country’s expanding space program.
