According to the White House Correspondents' Association, Trump made the request after being evacuated from the Washington Hilton following a security breach involving an armed suspect.

WHCA Chair Weijia Jiang later confirmed that all attendees were safe, but authorities decided to fully clear the venue.

Reports said Trump initially wanted to return to the dinner after the evacuation, but law enforcement officials insisted the building be emptied as a precaution.

The annual event, traditionally focused on the relationship between the presidency and the press, was abruptly halted after gunfire erupted near the main security screening area.

The United States Secret Service said the suspect was taken into custody after attempting to breach security. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said the individual underestimated the agency’s protective capabilities and was stopped immediately.

“Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy,” Quinn said, praising the coordinated response of law enforcement agencies.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. He is expected to appear in federal court on Monday, according to multiple U.S. media reports.
